Talent available!

EVA Report “Talent available – Tapping the Expat Talent Pool”, written by Aira Vehaskari, looks at the existing pool of educated and skilled foreign professionals in Finland. This group faces certain obstacles in securing meaningful careers in Finland, and potential employers face obstacles in keeping them here. If Finland cannot ensure that these people are happy enough to stay and contribute to Finland’s economy and culture, there is little point in trying to attract more.

The public debate on immigrant employment in Finland is one-sided and over-simplified. It is most often based on the assumption that immigrants have nothing to offer the Finnish economy. This view fails to recognise the fact that the immigrant population is as varied as the native one.

From the perspective of the Finnish economy, talented foreign professionals can help Finland grow, internationalise and become more competitive and cosmopolitan.
