A friend yet a stranger – How to understand the United States

Is the weakened state of the relationship between Europe and the United States a permanent or temporary phenomenon? Why is it so difficult for us to understand the Americans – and for the Americans to understand us Europeans? How should we view the United States? EVA Fellow Esko Aho has written an EVA REPORT on the Finnish relationship with the United States.

The United States is familiar to us, because American popular culture has penetrated all over the world. But at the same time it is unknown, as this superficial knowledge is a hindrance to deeper understanding.

According to Esko Aho, it is futile to yearn for a return to the good old days. In the future, the relationship between Europe and the United States must be built on new foundations, taking into account the cultural factors that unite and separate the continents. This report is in Finnish.
